By the mid-90s, the VW bus was just another 'minivans', and no longer the unique creature it had been in the 1960s and 1970s, when ads in Life magazine were selling the VW Type 2 of the era as a 'station wagon'. We caught a mid-60's VW bus in Colorado Springs a while back.
