Japanese Drift Cars: The Toyota AE86 and imitators

From Don Culbertson, in far-West Texas. "My son is a big fan of 1980s drifting cars from Japan, mainly the Toyota AE 86. The original AE86 is underpowered but it is rear-wheel drive with an emergency brake lever which locks up the back wheels allowing the car to slide sideways while making corners. Victor has a 2002 Subaru which he uses as a rally/drifting car on the open prairie in Marfa, Texas. Asked about this car (below), seen in a parking lot in El Paso, he identified it as a Toyota Supra. It has Japanese license plates and authentic detailing associated with the Toyota AE 86 drifting cars. ..
"He says that the car is okay–but it’s too modern, not authentic, not his thing. And we have to go with the 18-year-old on this one, I think."
