Paul Seeseequasis, "Turning the Lens"

Turning the Lens was an exhibition curated by by Paul Seesequasis at the Art Gallery of Swift Current (Saskatchewan) in 2020. The exhibition celebrated the everyday life and ongoing resilience in Canadian Indigenous communities. Seesequasis, a Plains Cree writer, journalist and cultural activist collected archival images of everyday life among First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities from the 1920s through the 1970s. Sharing these on social media resulted in the identification of the individuals, places, events and stories that had largely eluded institutional catalogues. The exhibition was an extension of this research project. Seeseequasis is author of Blanket Toss Under the Midnight Sun: Portraits of Everyday Life in Indigenous Communities.
