1962 Chevrolet Impala, Colorado Springs
When I'm in The Springs I get my hair cut at the Downtown Barber Shop on Willamette Street; have been going there as long as I have been Visiting Writer at Colorado College. The owner and only barber, Genaro Vasquez, is an old Navy guy, who grew up down the road in Pueblo. I thought he was maybe late 60s but I think he told me a couple years ago that he was eighty, and that was then. He keeps a stationery bike in the shop which he rides between haircuts, which perhaps explains the great shape he's in. Serendipitous things happen when I let myself hang out in places that have the right vibe...so there I was getting my haircut ($16) when this gorgeous sea-mist green Impala pulls up outside. The owner came in for a haircut and I got the story on the car, which has been repainted once and has had an engine rebuild. Spent its whole life between Colorado Springs and Scottsdale AZ. The car is in very clean shape and it's that best of old rides, a cool daily driver and not a trailer queen.
