Fast Commute on the I-10, the 495 or the 101

In London a couple years ago someone who had once upon a time lived in LA corrected me for referring to freeways as "the 495", "the 101", "The Ten", etc. This person claimed everyone in LA used their names, "the Santa Monica", "The Hollywood", etc. Well in my fairly extensive (15 years) LA experience no one I knew ever referred to the freeways by anything except a number. The unique thing was there was always an article preceding the number. (In, LA, I-10 is always The Ten whereas in Portland Maine, for example, I-295 is just "295". I've never heard anyone called The 495 the San Diego Freeway.
